The Siren (Tamarah Murley) lures unsuspecting young men to their doom outside a sleazy bar. The Hire (Rex Manaster) never fails to complete a contract. The two meet in a smoky bar near closing time. One is the hunter and the other is the prey, but neither knows who is whom. This game of cat and mouse unfolds in a non-linear manner that builds the tension to the very end.

'Timing' Notes:

By Writer Aaron Settle

A Matter of Timing was one of those things I wrote for me. I took a lot of things that I liked and jammed them together, and Timing was the end result. A Matter of Timing is part film noir, part homage to Christopher Nolan’s great film Following, and part modern-day fairy tale. Yes, I said fairy tale.

To me, A Matter of Timing is a film noir fairy tale. Morals are a bit skewed in fairy tales, no one thinks twice about killing a villain in a fairy tale and the morality of the hero is never in question. We don’t know what kind of person Prince Charming was, only that he saved Snow White, and he was, well charming. The same holds true for the Hire. Like the aforementioned prince, he gets more of a title than a name, and his motives are never explored. He’s after someone who did something bad. Does anything else matter? Not in a fairy tale. Instead of a magical forest, our story takes place in a smoky bar. But once again, it has a detached feel, like it’s not part of our reality.

When we were filming, a few people remarked how it was odd for certain things to be going on and no one question it. But once again, who questions motives or actions in a fairy tale? Look at the characters: the wayward knight, not opposed to shedding blood;. the siren, luring men to their death; the vicious monster who beats men to death with his bare hands. All the elements of the fairy tale are there. And the best part is, if you don’t want to see them, you don’t have to. It’s just a cool little story about a hired killer and his victim. That works too.
