Ryan just drifts through life, dividing time between his girlfriend and his one true love, the television. But all that changes when his girlfriend breaks up with him using the cryptic reason of “I love you, but I'm not in love with you.” Unable to comprehend what has happened to him, Ryan begins a journey to find the first girl who broke his heart.

Cole doesn't talk to girls. He never learned. Instead, he spends his time in the park playing chess against himself. But Cole isn't prepared for Isabella, a girl as stubborn as he is who isn't about to take no for an answer.

Karen loves Eddie. Karen's roommate Donna hates Eddie. Eddie hates Donna, but his friend Dean doesn't. Eddie is afraid to commit to Karen. He can't tell anyone why, except that it involves the lyrics to a Prince song.

These are just a few of the characters who populate the world of Chess Soup, a romantic comedy about people who know nothing about dating or the opposite sex.
